Malta International Airport awarded with 4 stars by Skytrax

Malta International Airport has been awarded four stars by the leading air transport industry audit organisation, Skytrax. Only 13 other European airports are ranked four stars, including Zurich, Barcelona’s El Prat and Amsterdam’s Schipol.
Introduced in 1989, this star classification for airlines and airports is now hailed as a benchmark of quality standards in the air transport industry worldwide. Skytrax grants a final rating after its team of experienced air transport research professionals conducts a thorough evaluation of the frontline products and services, which are offered at different points of the airport journey. Globally, only 38 airports have four stars with the likes of Beijing and Vancouver enjoying this ranking.
Malta International Airport fared remarkably well in most of the audited areas and scooped more than four stars for its signage systems, its new website, car park facilities, Internet and Wi-Fi availability, its food and beverage offering, and the La Valette lounges, with Skytrax describing the latter as “excellent”. Also garnering positive remarks were the efficient security screening processes, in spite of current limitations.
Malta International Airport CEO Alan Borg described the strong performance in the above-mentioned categories as an affirmation of the success of the airport’s ongoing efforts to enhance guests’ experience, even beyond the terminal. He went on to thank the airport team and its stakeholders, particularly the immigration officers, customs officials, the police and ground-handlers for their invaluable contribution in picking up another prestigious award.
A SWOT analysis, presented by Skytrax as part of the audit, highlights that the terminal expansion project should be regarded as an opportunity to address the airport’s current limitations, the most palpable of.

PIA to lease 3 Airbus A330 from SriLankan

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) signed a wet-lease agreement with SriLankan Airlines for three A330s, PIA CEO Bernd Hildenbrand confirmed to ATW.
“The first aircraft will be delivered [from Aug. 1], while the rest [will come] in the following months,” PIA said July 29.
According to the Pakistan flag carrier, the A330s will be used primarily for a 6X-weekly premier service to London Heathrow, which is being launched Aug. 14. Three weekly flights will be operated from Islamabad and three from Lahore.
“Our main airport is Karachi, but the metropolis is no longer the center it once was. The best business for PIA will be generated from Islamabad and Lahore,” PIA CEO Bernd Hildenbrand told ATWrecently.
With the A330s, more professional crew and improved service standards, PIA wants to deliver a more positive experience to passengers, to regain its market share, according to the statement.
“The carrier has become rather old-fashioned over the years. We want to change this, improve the product, and bring PIA to a standard similar to that of other world carriers,” Hildenbrand said, adding the carrier is on a fundamental path of change, encouraged by the government, to move into a new era.
PIA’s premier service should be expanded to other destinations as more aircraft arrive.
In addition to the three wet-leased A330s, up to five of the airline’s 11 Boeing 777s will be reconfigured with new business- and economy-class cabins, new inflight entertainment systems and services. The first reconfigured aircraft should be available from February 2017.
SriLankan has been facing increased competition, especially from Gulf carriers, and this fall will close two out of three European services—Frankfurt and Paris.

Jetblue ticket fares to Cuba beginning from $99 one-way

JetBlue’s first regularly scheduled flights to Cuba will begin next month, with fares beginning at $99 one-way.
JetBlue’s first non-charter Cuba route will launch Aug. 31, when it begins nonstop service between Fort Lauderdale and the central Cuban city of Santa Clara. JetBlue initially will operate three flights a week before going to daily service on Oct. 1.
That would appear to put JetBlue in line to be the first U.S. carrier to begin normal airline flights to Cuba since the Obama administration moved to normalize relations between the nations. American Airlines and Silver Airways also have announced their initial schedules for regular Cuba flights, though the first of those services don’t begin until a few days after JetBlue’s first flight.
JetBlue says service from Fort Lauderdale to two other Cuban cities will start in November. Daily flights to the interior city of Camagüey begin Nov. 3 while daily service to Holguín in eastern Cuba starts Nov. 10.

Allegiant to purchase 12 new Airbus A320ceos

Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air has agreed to purchase 12 new Airbus A320ceo aircraft. According to a company statement, this first-time new aircraft purchase is another step toward Allegiant’s planned transition to an all Airbus fleet by 2019.
“The fact that these planes are new is notable, but should not be seen as a change in our fundamental strategy,” Allegiant chairman and CEO Maury Gallagher said. “We have always looked at building our fleet opportunistically, and this agreement is no exception. With Airbus preparing to transition production of its current engine option models to new engine option models, we were able to negotiate an order for 12 end-of-line slots.”
Allegiant has selected CFM56-5B engines for these aircraft, valued at $270 million at list prices, including spare engines, according to a statement by CFM International.
The aircraft are expected to enter service between 2017 and 2018. This transaction brings Allegiant a total of 77 Airbus aircraft either in service or committed for future delivery.
“This purchase agreement is an important step in transitioning to a single-fleet type,” Allegiant COO Jude Bricker said. “Streamlining our fleet will increase efficiencies across our entire operation and bring economic advantages in fuel savings and a higher number of seats—allowing us to continue offering the industry's most affordable fares, while increasing reliability.”
By the end of 2016, the company’s in-service Airbus fleet will number 33, consisting of 16 A320s and 17 A319s. At the end of this year, Allegiant will have a total of 85 aircraft in revenue service.

Cebu Pacific orders 2 additional Airbus A330-300

MIAMI — Manila-based budget carrier Cebu Pacific has placed a firm order for two additional Airbus A330-300s, taking to eight the total number of the type in its wide-body fleet.
The Philippine carrier plans to incorporate these new aircraft to fuel the expansion of its long-haul operations to new destinations in the Middle East, Australia and the United States, while providing additional capacity to feed high-demand domestic trunk routes.
Cebu Pacific has configured its A330-300s in a single-class, high-density arrangement with 436 seats.
“The newly ordered aircraft will enable us to add more long haul routes, including the launch of our first flights to the U.S. We are excited to be expanding our widebody fleet, offering more low fare options for our customers to fly further than ever before” said Lance Gokongwei, Cebu Pacific President and Chief Executive Officer.
Cebu Pacific currently operates a fleet of 57 aircraft, mostly comprised by Airbus A320 family types (seven A319s and 36 A320s). Plans are to phase out all of its A319s, which have been sold to Allegiant, while taking delivery of 32 A321neo aircraft from 2017 to 2021.

Air Asia comes within 152m of colliding with Jetstar in Australia

A Jetstar and an AirAsia plane came dangerously close to a midair collision after taking off from the Gold Coast, China’s Xinhua news agency reported Australian authorities as saying.
It was reported that the AirAsia Airbus A330 (flight D7206) on its way to New Zealand came within 152 metres of a Jetstar flight that was about to land, causing alarms to sound in both planes’ cockpits.
The minimum vertical separation for major passenger aircraft in Australia is 305 metres. The incident occurred north of Coolangatta airport in Queensland.
Jetstar pilots were forced to take evasive action as the AirAsia plane encroached on its flight path, putting their aircraft into a climb to avert a possible catastrophe.
Jetstar statement
A Jetstar spokesman told NewsCorp that pilots of their A320, which can carry 180 passengers took corrective action to restore the safe distance between the two aircraft and landed on the Gold Coast without further incident.
Air Asia statement
In a statement, AirAsia X maintained that its pilots had followed instructions by the Collangatta airport Air Traffic Control, prior to a near midair collision with a Jetstar passenger aircraft in Queensland yesterday (21July16).
The pilots of flight D7 206 had followed the instructions laid out by the airport’s ATC. “AirAsia X pilots on board flight D7 206 received clearance for take off at Coolangatta airport on 21 July 2016 and followed the flight path according to the heading and altitude instructed by Air Traffic Control,” said the airline.
The company also confirmed that the pilots received warning from the traffic collision avoidance system. “The crew responded immediately to the resolution advisory by reducing the vertical speed according to procedures that they are trained for. “The aircraft continued its journey safely without any subsequent events,” said the statement.

China Eastern, China Southern and other SkyTeam carriers to move to Beijing New Airport in 2019

China Eastern and China Southern Airlines, along with other SkyTeam member carriers, plan to move to Beijing New Airport when it opens in 2019, according to the CAAC.
Air China and other Star Alliance member carriers are expected to remain at Beijing Capital Airport, which has a slot shortage, making it increasingly difficult for carriers to get approval to boost flight frequencies and open new routes.
Beijing New Airport, which is located in Daxing in the southeast part of Beijing, is projected to handle an annual passenger volume of 45 million in 2020, 72 million in 2025, and 100 million in the longer term. It is expected to serve Beijing, Tianjin and the Hebei province.
As early as 2011, China Southern signed a cooperation agreement with the Beijing government to allocate about 200 aircraft—Airbus A330s and A380s—to Beijing New Airport over the next 10 years.
The regulator announced Thursday it is allowing China Eastern and China Southern to build their own infrastructures at Beijing New Airport based on their respective passenger boardings that would account for 40% of the airport’s annual passenger volume. In addition, both carriers can take four years as a transition period to transfer all domestic and international routes to the new airport and enjoy some favorable policies and support in areas including international traffic rights, slots allocation, airport charges and ground handling.
Local industrial analysts said Air China was the big winner from Beijing’s decision while China Eastern would be negatively affected as it has a 50% market share on the most profitable domestic business routes from Beijing (capital airport) to Shanghai.
In addition to China’s big three carriers, CAAC said Shijiazhuang-based Hebei Airlines, Beijing Capital Airlines and China Postal Group would also move to Beijing New Airport. However, it remains unknown whether Hainan Airlines will move there. Hainan operates domestic routes out of Beijing Capital Airport’s Terminal 1 and international routes out of Terminal 2.

JetBlue starts flights to Cuba on August 31

MIAMI — Low-cost carrier JetBlue announced Thursday it will start operating scheduled flights to Cuba on August 31, thus becoming the first U.S. commercial airline to fly regularly to the island in over 50 years.
Subject to approval from the Cuban government, JetBlue would start three weekly scheduled flights from its focus city at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to Santa Clara’s Abel Santamaria Airport, located three hours east of Havana, the capital city of Cuba.
Last June, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) cleared six American carriers, including JetBlue, to start flying regularly to Cuba, further complemented with a tentative decision announced earlier this month for flights to Havana.
JetBlue will also fly daily to Camaguey starting November 3 and Holguin beginning November 10, also from Fort Lauderdale. So far, no flights to Havana have been announced.
“It’s a new day for Cuba travelers and one we have thoughtfully prepared for,” said Marty St. George, executive vice president commercial and planning, JetBlue. “We are proud to usher in a new era of Cuba travel with affordable fares and great service.”
JetBlue has beaten competitors American Airlines and Silver Airways into the Cuban market. Both carriers have also announced their departure dates. American Airlines planned its inaugural flights to Cienfuegos and Holguin on Sept. 7, while Silver Airways is set to start its first scheduled service to Cuba on Sept. 1, with a flight to Santa Clara from Fort Lauderdale.
Travelers to Cuba may qualify under one of a dozen categories authorized by the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, which excludes tourism travel, and will require an entrance visa. JetBlue said that will make those visas available for purchase upon check-in or at the gate for connecting customers on the day of travel.
The carrier also advised to contact the Cuban Embassy in Washington to determine the appropriate type of visa required by Cuba for their purpose of travel.

Boeing Delivers 6000th 737 to Turkish Airlines

MIAMI — Boeing has delivered the 6000th Next-Generation 737 this week. The aircraft is a 737-800, delivered to Turkish Airlines.
The jetliner (TC-JVZ • MSN 60025 • LN 6000) was delivered from Boeing Field (BFI) via Toronto (YYZ) and Keflavik (KEF) to Istanbul-Ataturk (IST), arriving as flight number TK6830 on July 28th.
With deliveries starting in May 1999, Turkish Airlines has built a fleet of 90 Boeing 737NGs, mostly 737-800s and -900s.  It also previously operated 34 Boeing 737-400s and -500s.
The first Next-Generation 737 was delivered to Southwest Airlines on October 30, 1998 (N707SA • MSN 27481), and it took three years and two weeks to reach the first thousand delivered, also to Southwest Airlines (N418WN • MSN 29823), which also took delivery of the 2000th 737NG in July 2006 (N248WN • MSN 32509).
Since then, the gap between each record has been shrinking. The 3000thNext-Generation 737 was delivered in three years and one month to India’s Jet Airways (VT-JBL • MSN 35651), and the 4000th delivery to China Southern Airlines (B-5283 • MSN 38919) took two years and eight months.
The 5000th Next-Generation 737 built was delivered on July 30, 2014, a C-40 Clipper for the US Navy, taking just two years and three months, with the 6000th aircraft mark just shy of two years.
The current production of the 737 is 42 aircraft per month. Boeing plans to boost the rate to 47 aircraft per month in 2017, 52 in 2018, and to 57 by 2019. This all happens as 737 MAX production begins to come online.

Boeing thinking to stop the production of 747

More than four decades after the Boeing 747 entered service, Boeing may be finally getting ready to retire its iconic humpbacked aircraft.
Passenger airlines mostly gave up on the double-decker 747 several years ago, with few ordering the Boeing 747-8, the latest iteration, which debuted with Lufthansa in 2012. Airlines have ordered fewer than 50, with most going to Lufthansa, Korean Air Lines and Air China. The company’s previous model, the 747-400, was more popular, with Boeing delivering 450 to airlines through 2005. In all, Boeing has delivered more than 1,500 747s since Pan American World Airways introduced the first in 1970.
Even as airlines started preferring more efficient two-engine aircraft, such as the Boeing 777 and Boeing 777-300, the manufacturer had been hopeful the newest-generation 747 could continue to sell to cargo operators. The 747-8 has been slightly more popular as a freighter, with Cargolux Airlines, Cathay Pacific Cargo, Korean Air Lines Cargo and Atlas Air all operating it. But this year, Boeing said, it has added only four freighter orders.
“Cargo is a very tough market right now,” CEO Dennis A. Muilenburg told analysts Wednesday during the company’s second quarter earnings call.
In a regulatory filing this week, Boeing said it could be forced to cancel the program if it cannot sell more jets. For the foreseeable future, it plans to build only six 747s per year. It had been building a dozen per year.
Boeing also recently took a special charge of more than $800 million related to the 747 program.

“If we are unable to obtain sufficient orders and/or market, production and other risks cannot be mitigated, we could record additional losses that may be material, and it is reasonably possible that we could decide to end production of the 747,” the company said in its filing.
On Boeing’s earnings call, executives painted a slightly rosier picture. While Muilenburg noted that “air cargo market headwinds” are affecting sales and called the climate “challenging,” he suggested the company will try to save the jet.
“Despite the ongoing challenges of air cargo market, we continue to see the 747 as a unique and significant value creator for our customers over the long-term,” he told analysts.
Boeing does have at least one important 747 customer it must satisfy. The U.S. Air Force is expecting to buy two 747-8s to replace the current Air Force One models the U.S. president flies. Boeing should deliver them in 2023.
On the call, Muilenburg said Boeing is hopeful the market for the 747-8 will improve toward the end of the decade, when more cargo operators may seek to add larger jets.
“We have a number of ongoing customer discussions in the cargo marketplace in addition to the two Air Force One airplanes,” Muilenburg said. “That said, we still have our work cut out for us.”
