Wizzair W64551 A320 at Bourgas, rejected takeoff due to bird strike

A Wizz Air Airbus A320-200, registration HA-LWC performing flight W6-4551 from Bourgas (Bulgaria) to London Luton,EN (UK), was accelerating for takeoff from Bourgas' runway 04 when the crew rejected takeoff at high speed (about 110 knots over ground) due to a bird strike. The aircraft slowed safely and returned to the apron.

A replacement Airbus A320-200 registration HA-LYU positioned to Bourgas, performed the flight and is estimated to reach London with a delay of 7.5 hours.

The airport reported a bird impacted the aircraft.

Passengers reported they observed while disembarking the aircraft, that the main tyres were deflated.

Wizz Air announced new route from Sofia to Catania

Wizz Air today announced a new route from Sofia to Catania on the island of Sicily as well as a domestic service connecting the capital with Varna.

The new services will commence on 26 March 2017. Catania flights will be operated with two weekly frequencies on Wednesdays and Sundays while Varna will be a daily service.

Since its first flight in 2006, Wizz Air has continuously expanded its operations in Bulgaria. The airline currently operates from three airports: Sofia, Varna and Bourgas and offers flights on 33 routes to 17 countries from Bulgaria. The airline recently announced further expansion plans on deploying a seventh aircraft, arriving to its Sofia base in December. The additional aircraft means a 42% in seat capacity year on year which will be deployed on new routes announced today as well as earlier announced services to Nuremberg, Basel and Doncaster Sheffield.

Speaking at a press conference in Sofia George Michalopoulos, the Chief Commercial Officer of Wizz Air said:

Wizzair announced a sixth Airbus A320 in Katowice's base

Wizz Air, the largest low-cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe announced today that it will base a sixth Airbus A320 aircraft at its Katowice base. From March 2017 the airline will operate four new services to such attractive holiday destinations as Catania on the island of Sicily, the capital of Portugal, Lisbon, Reykjavik in Iceland and Malta. With the new routes, Wizz Air will have over 2,2 million seats on sale on Katowice routes in 2017, representing a 19% growth year over year.

Since its first flight in 2004, Wizz Air has constantly expanded its Katowice network, which now consists of 36 low-fare routes to 17 countries. In 2015, Wizz Air carried more than 1,5 million passengers on its Katowice routes supporting over 1000 local jobs*.

The new aircraft represents an investment of $98 million** by WIZZ in Katowice, creating 36 additional direct jobs with the airline. Wizz Air’s new employees will join 200 dedicated local crew, who deliver excellent onboard service on each WIZZ flight. 

With its new Katowice services, Wizz Air now offers a total of 136 low-fare routes to 24 countries from eight Polish airports.  All flights are already on sale and can be booked on wizzair.com from PLN 129***.

Wizz Air started new route between Nuremberg and Sofia

Wizz Air today started operating its new service from Sofia to Nuremberg, Germany.

The Nuremberg flight departed from Sofia with 154 passengers on board, while 170 passengers flew with the maiden flight from Nuremberg to Sofia. The newest Wizz Air route is operated two times per week on Mondays and Fridays.

Nuremberg is the second-largest city of Bavaria and is well-known for various historic sights like the St. Sebald Church dating back to 1215, Imperial Castle and the Church of Our Lady. Nuremberg is also well known to host one of the most famous Christmas markets, the Christkindlesmarkt, organized during Advent in the main square of the old town every year.

Wizz Air currently offers a total of 37 routes to 17 countries from three Bulgarian airports: Sofia, Varna and Bourgas, making available the largest low fare network for Bulgarian customers.

Rome Ciampino airport will close for maintenance work on October

Aeroporti di Roma (AdR), the firm responsible for managing Rome's airports, has announced that Rome Ciampino will close to all traffic for a period of two weeks later this autumn.

Between October 14 and 29, sections of the airfield's runway 15/33 along with various taxiways and junctions will undergo necessary maintenance work.

As such, for the duration of the works, Wizz Air and Ryanair will shift the majority of their respective Ciampino operations to Rome Fiumicino Terminal 2. Ryanair has announced that some routes may be cancelled over the period.

Ciampino's cargo flights will be redirected to Fiumicino's Cargo City while General Aviation will be allowed to use Fiumicino albeit only during non-peak hours.

Wizz Air launches services to Berlin from Cluj-Napoca

The Hungarian airline Wizz Air has just launched a new service from Berlin Schönefeld to Cluj-Napoca in Romania. The flight departs from Berlin Schönefeld every Wednesday and Sunday at 13:25 and flies direct to Dracula’s home country.

The return flight is on the same day at 12:00 and lands in Berlin at 12:55. The flight time is just under two hours. Wizz air is operating the service with a modern Airbus A320. Since March, the airline has been flying from Berlin to Skopje (FYROM), and on 23 September it will be adding a service to Kutaisi (Georgia).

Wizz Air celebrates its first Bergamo flight operated with one of its brand new Airbus A321 aircraft

Wizz Air, the largest low-cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe, today celebrates the memorable milestone of its first Bergamo flight operated with one of the airline’s brand new, state-of-the-art Airbus A321 aircraft.

Bergamo was one of the first airports WIZZ added to its low-fare route network in May 2004 and since then, the airline has constantly expanded its network connecting Lombardy with more and more Central and Eastern European destinations. With the recently announced Suceava and Podgorica services, Wizz Air’s Bergamo network now consists of 19 routes to 10 countries.  Together with Bergamo, Wizz Air operates flights from 14 Italian airports offering 80 routes to 21 destinations.

Wizz Air’s commitment to Bergamo is underlined by the significant growth in passenger numbers. In 2015, Wizz Air carried nearly 500,000 passengers on its low fare routes to and from Bergamo, a 15% growth year over year.

The first WIZZ flight with an Airbus A321ceo aircraft is an important milestone in the airline’s Bergamo operations. The type was first deployed in WIZZ’s fleet in November 2015 and Wizz Air now has seven A321 aircraft flying its most popular routes.
