Norwegian begins longhaul flights from Barcelona to US in June 2017

Norwegian has announced it will begin longhaul operations out of Barcelona El Prat during summer of next year.

The LCC said in a statement that flights to Newark (4x weekly), Los Angeles Int'l (3x weekly); Oakland (3x weekly); and Fort Lauderdale Int'l (2x weekly), would commence effective June 5, 2017.

"The launch of direct flights between Barcelona and the United States is a new milestone for Norwegian," CEO Bjorn Kjos said. "Spain is an important market for us where we have been very well received since we launched here. Many Spaniards choose to fly Norwegian on domestic Spanish routes and routes to other parts of Europe. An increasing number of Americans also fly with us to Europe, and we look forward to welcoming even more travelers from both sides of the Atlantic."

Currently, Norwegian's operations at the Catalonian gateway include routes to Bergen, Berlin Schönefeld, Bilbao, Billund, Birmingham Int'l, Copenhagen Kastrup, Dubrovnik, Edinburgh, Gothenburg Landvetter, Hamburg Fuhlsbüttel, Helsinki Vantaa, Las Palmas, London Gatwick, Manchester Int'l, Oslo Gardermoen, Palma Son Sant Joan, Stavanger, Stockholm Arlanda, Tenerife Norte, Trondheim and Warsaw Chopin.

Norwegian starts new flights from London/Gatwick to Keflavik and Rovaniemi

Low-cost airline Norwegian continues its UK expansion, by putting on sale two new routes from London Gatwick to Keflavik, Iceland and Rovaniemi, Finland.

From October 30th, Norwegian will add its first UK service to the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik.

Three weekly flights will operate direct to Keflavik throughout winter on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays – perfect for a long weekend.

Visiting Father Christmas also just got easier, with the start of UK’s only scheduled direct flight to Lapland’s capital – Rovaniemi.

Starting just in time for a Christmas getaway on the December 19th, Norwegian are offering twice-weekly flights to the official home of Santa Claus.

The flights will operate on a Monday and Friday.

As well as the new winter routes, Europe’s third largest low-cost airline Norwegian, has also increase the number of London Gatwick flights to Lanzarote, Tenerife, Tromso and Grenoble, adding an additional 25,000 seats for the winter season on these routes alone.

Sun seekers will now benefit from an additional weekly service to Lanzarote and Tenerife departing Wednesday and Thursday respectively.

Tromso will also benefit from a third weekly service on a Wednesday and Grenoble will increase to a twice-weekly service on a Saturday.

Thomas Ramdahl, chief commercial officer at Norwegian said: “We are committed to offering low-fares with choice and flexibly for our passengers.

“Both Reykjavik and Rovaniemi are fantastic additions to our growing UK route network, which now serves more than 50 destinations non-stop.”

Norwegian B738 flight DY3195 returned to Stockholm, suspected tail strike

A Norwegian Air Shuttle Boeing 737-800, registration LN-NHD performing flight DY-3195 from Stockholm (Sweden) to Copenhagen (Denmark) with 108 people on board, departed Stockholm Arlanda Airport's runway 08 when during rotation cabin crew in the aft cabin heard noises similiar to a tail strike. The aircraft became airborne and was climbing out of Arlanda, when cabin crew reported their observation to the flight deck, the captain stopped the climb at FL090 and decided to return to Stockholm advising ATC they suspected a tail strike. The aircraft returned to Stockholm for a safe landing on runway 01L about 20 minutes after departure. Emergency services found no damage, the aircraft taxied to the apron.

The airline reported cabin crew heard something during takeoff, suspecting a tail strike the crew returned the aircraft to Stockholm. However, an examination of the aircraft did not find anything out of the ordinary.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground for about one hour, then departed again as flight DY-8601 and reached Copenhagen with a delay of 1.5 hours.

Norwegian Dreamliner 787-9 Service Expansion in Summer

Norwegian in the preliminary schedule filing for summer 2017 season has filed long-haul operational schedule, effective 25MAR17. The preliminary filing sees the introduction of Boeing 787-9 service to Asia, as well as flights originating to/from Oslo. By August 2017, all service to/from Oslo will move to Boeing 787-9 operation, replacing -8.

Norwegian flight to Heraklion, Greece delayed because a passenger had an ISIS tattoo

A passenger allegedly had an ISIS flag tattooed on his arm was removed from a Norwegian flight from Stockholm to Heraklion on Thursday.

The flight was to leave Stockholm at 9pm.

Reports: the airline refused to fly with the man on board and the captain removed him and his female companion – which caused the flight to have delays

Norwegian in winter 2016/17 season is expanding service between New York and Guadeloupe, as New York JFK – Pointe-a-Pitre service receives 4th weekly flight, starting 18DEC16. This seasonal service will commence on 11NOV16, with 737-800 aircraft.

Iberia Express began 2X-weekly Madrid-Gothenburg GOT service.

Norwegian dips into wet-lease marketplace | ATWOnline

Scandinavian low-cost carrier (LCC) Norwegian Air Shuttle will wet lease up to 10 aircraft to cope with demand on its routes this summer. It will also offer refunds to any passengers disappointed about not traveling on Norwegian’s own aircraft.

The LCC has pulled in aircraft—mainly Airbus A320s and Boeing 737s, but also some Fokker 100s, from several European airlines including  British charter Titan Airways, Portuguese charter Hi Fly, Slovakia’s Go2Sky and Germany’s Avanti Air.

“Norwegian plans to wet lease between five to 10 aircraft over the summer period to help provide additional capacity on selected routes, predominantly in Scandinavia,” a Norwegian spokesman said. “Norwegian will predominantly lease Boeing 737 and A320 aircraft to offer a similar capacity to Norwegian’s existing fleet. However, with limited wet-lease operators available during the peak season, a small number of Fokker aircraft will also be used on selected routes.”

The spokesman added, “We would like to apologize to affected passengers for any inconvenience this may cause, but the most important thing for us is that our passengers get to their final destination as planned. The aircraft are all being leased from approved European operators, but we understand if people are disappointed that they are not going to fly with our aircraft. Therefore, we have offered passengers their money back if they do not wish to travel.”

Norwegian Air Shuttle’s UK division denied interim flying permit from US DOT – Aviation Gazette

U.S. regulators on Thursday dismissed an initial application from European discount airline Norwegian Air Shuttle A/S to establish a new long-haul operation in the U.K.
The U.S. Department of Transportation will continue to review the controversial carrier’s plan and is still to complete its approval for a license for the airline to establish a base in Ireland for long-haul flights.
Norwegian Air needs approval from U.S. authorities for overseas bases that operate flights to the U.S. The U.K. and Irish bases have come under criticism from some airlines and labor groups. Critics have said the airline is trying to circumvent some labor and tax rules with the overseas bases to lower its costs, charges Norwegian denies.
U.S. regulators said they needed more time to review the application from Norwegian Air U.K., which has already secured support from British aviation authorities.
Norwegian Air said it still expected U.S. regulators to ultimately grant its application for the U.K. operation. “Given Norwegian UK’s clear and legitimate right to a Foreign Carrier Permit, we therefore remain confident we will receive final approval,” it said in a statement.
Norwegian Air is the first of the new breed of low-cost airlines to launch flights to Asia and across the Atlantic from Europe.
The Transportation Department’s decision won’t affect Norwegian’s current trans-Atlantic services to the U.S., which it flies using a license granted by Norwegian regulators. U.S. approval would allow it to use the same aircraft for flights to other countries such as Brazil and South Africa, as well as the U.S.
Opponents of Norwegian’s overseas bases had staged a last-ditch effort to block approval from the U.S., arguing that the Brexit vote left the future of aviation agreements with the U.K. up in the air.

Norwegian Air International, the subsidiary of Norwegian have just received the green light from  the US DOT (Department of Transportation) which will grant the subsidiary a foreign air carrier permit. When the permit is made final, it will allow the subsidiary to begin operations to the US, including the first ever service between Boston and Cork, Ireland!

“A final approval, based on the Open Skies Agreement between the U.S. and EU, will be win-win for consumers and the economy on both sides of the Atlantic. It will allow Norwegian to expand our U.S. operations. Norwegian Air Shuttle’s (Norwegian.com) (Oslo) inaugural flight from Boston to the French Caribbean island of Martinique will take off today, while the first flights from New York and Baltimore/Washington to Martinique and Guadeloupe also departing this week.

Norwegian will be the only airline to offer free WiFi and live TV service between the U.S. and Caribbean using its Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which already operate on 29 routes from the UK to Europe.
