Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) saw its first scheduled landing of a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner Aug. 1 as a British Airways nonstop from London Heathrow made its inaugural flight to Baltimore, Maryland.
The aircraft arrived at 8:11 p.m. EST, 51 minutes behind schedule, as thunderstorms moved through the Baltimore region.
A retinue of state and local government and business officials, BWI executives, British Airways representatives and journalists met the flight and were taken on a short tour of the aircraft before its 10:10 p.m. EST return flight to London Heathrow.
“This is an important milestone,” BWI CEO Ricky Smith said. “Our shared customers will [see] a significant improvement to their travel experience between BWI Marshall and London.”
British Airways has ordered 24 787s, which will arrive by 2017. The aircraft is a mainstay of the airline’s long-haul fleet and—along with the Airbus A380—forms the centerpiece of British Airways’ £5 billion ($6.6 billion) investment in products and services.
The aircraft launched into commercial service flying customers from Toronto followed by Newark, Austin, Chengdu, Calgary, Philadelphia and now Baltimore.
The 787-8 offers a choice of British Airways’ Club World (business class-35 seats), World Traveller Plus (premium economy-25 seats) and World Traveller (economy-154 seats) cabins with a total of 214 seats.
