Warsaw's Chopin Airport had broken all records this year by handling more than 11 million passengers for the first time in its history.

And, although there is still one day to go until the end of the year, the airport decided to mark the occasion by celebrating the achievement with the eleven millionth, one hundred and eleven thousandth, one hundred and eleventh passenger to pass through its doors in 2015!

The lucky passenger was Barbara Borkała who flew to Warsaw from Vienna by LOT Polish Airlines Embraer 195, who on walking into the terminal was greeted with a musical parade, rain of confetti and cake and tickets for two to Tokyo from LOT Polish Airlines.

She also received a 'Good Start' card entitling her to annual admission for two people to the airport’s Executive Lounges.

“This is a unique event for us, because for the first time in the history of the airport, we have exceeded 11 million passengers handled in a calendar year," said Chopin Airport director, Michał Kaczmarzyk.

"The total means that we now join the largest and most important airports in Central Europe.

"We are proud that our daily work, as well as close co-operation with our partners - mainly with LOT – brings a steady increase in traffic and such good results."

Warsaw Chopin's previous best year was in 2013 when 10.6 million passengers used the gateway.

Poland's capital city gateway is capable of handling up to 26mppa.

AirLive.net: NEWS Airbus is to delay the first delivery of the new A320neo until 2016

   

Airbus has delayed the delivery of its first A320neo aircraft by "a few days", a spokesman said on Wednesday, missing the goal to hand over the jet to its initial customer by the end of 2015.

"Discussions are continuing such that when we deliver the plane, it is truly operational in the Lufthansa fleet," the Airbus spokesman said. "It will take a few days."

Lufthansa is to become the first airline due to take delivery of the A320neo passenger jet earlier this month after Qatar Airways questioned technical performance of the engines.

Lufthansa said it had agreed with Airbus to delay the delivery to the start of 2016 due to "technical complexities".

Airbus said this related to delays in providing documentation.

To 2017 θα ολοκληρωθεί η επέκταση του διαδρόμου στο «Μακεδονία» - Metafores Press

   

Για το Μάρτιο του 2017 μετατέθηκε η ολοκλήρωση της επέκτασης, προς τη θάλασσα, του αεροδιαδρόμου 10-28 στο αεροδρόμιο "Μακεδονία" της Θεσσαλονίκης.

Το χρονοδιάγραμμα ολοκλήρωσης του έργου, από το 2011, που ήταν αρχικά μετατέθηκε στο τέλος του 2015, μετά τις παρατάσεις της συμπληρωματικής σύμβασης, και πλέον, αφού έχει εκτελεστεί το 80% του φυσικού αντικειμένου, μετατίθεται για το Μάρτιο του 2017, όπως ανακοίνωσε ο υπουργός Υποδομών Χρήστος Σπίρτζης.

Ο υπουργός διαβεβαίωσε ότι δεν υπάρχει πιθανότητα απένταξης από το ΕΣΠΑ και πως οι κοινοτικοί πόροι δεν θα χαθούν.

Στο έργο, το οποίο χωρίζεται σε δύο εργολαβίες, σημειώνονται μεγάλες καθυστερήσεις, λόγω "τεχνικών και οικονομικών προβλημάτων", όπως είπε ο κ. Σπίρτζης

Το έργο, συμβατικού προϋπολογισμού (μαζί με τη συμπληρωματική σύμβαση) 178,9 εκατ. ευρώ, εκτελείται από τις εταιρείες "ΑΚΤΩΡ" και "ΑΘΗΝΑ". Το δεύτερο, πολύ μικρότερο έργο για τον 10-28, ύψους 25 εκατ. ευρώ, αφορά την αναβάθμιση του χερσαίου τμήματος και έχει ανάδοχο την ΕΤΕΘ.

Malaysia Airlines tentatively schedules the last Boeing 777 revenue flight | World Airline News

    

Malaysia Airlines (Kuala Lumpur) is phasing out and retiring its Boeing 777-200 ER fleet as we have previously reported. According to Airline Route, the last revenue flight has now been tentatively scheduled for March 26, 2016 as flight MH 377 from Guangzhou to the Kuala Lumpur base.

The type was involved in two tragic aircraft losses in 2014.

Η Turkish Airlines ματαίωσε πτήσεις λόγω αναμενόμενων χιονοπτώσεων στη Κωνσταντινούπολη - Travelling News

Η Turkish Airlines ματαίωσε 142 πτήσεις της από και προς την Κωνσταντινούπολη και προειδοποίησε για περαιτέρω ακυρώσεις τις ερχόμενες ημέρες, εξαιτίας των αναμενόμενων χιονοπτώσεων στην πόλη.


Πολλές από τις πτήσεις που ακυρώθηκαν είναι εσωτερικές, αλλά επηρεάστηκαν επίσης και πτήσεις από αεροδρόμια στην Ευρώπη και τη Μέση Ανατολή, μεταξύ των οποίων του Αμβούργου, του Μονάχου, του Μιλάνου και της Τεχεράνης.

«Η ελαφριά χιονόπτωση που αναμένεται την Τετάρτη στην Κωνσταντινούπολη, προβλέπεται ισχυρότερη αύριο, στις 31 Δεκεμβρίου», αναφέρεται σε ανακοίνωση στην ιστοσελίδα της εταιρείας.

«Γι’ αυτόν τον λόγο, ορισμένα δρομολόγια στα αεροδρόμια Ατατούρκ και Σαμπιχά Γκιοκτσέν της Κωνσταντινούπολης ματαιώθηκαν και είναι πιθανόν να υπάρξουν κι άλλα προβλήματα λόγω της κακοκαιρίας τις ημέρες αυτές», προστίθεται στην ανακοίνωση.

Προειδοποιήσεις για σφοδρές χιονοπτώσεις εξέδωσε εξάλλου και το γραφείο του κυβερνήτη της Κωνσταντινούπολης συστήνοντας να αποφεύγονται οι μη απαραίτητες μετακινήσεις, γράφει η εφημερίδα Hurriyet. Η χιονόπτωση αναμένεται να αρχίσει σήμερα και να συνεχιστεί ως τις 2 Ιανουαρίου.

Σε ετοιμότητα βρίσκονται περισσότερα από 1.000 εκχιονιστικά και άλλα μηχανήματα για να διατηρήσουν ανοιχτό το οδικό δίκτυο της Κωνσταντινούπολης, προστίθεται στην ανακοίνωση του γραφείου του κυβερνήτη της τουρκικής πόλης.

Hong Kong celebrates opening of its new $10 billion Midfield Concourse - Airport World Magazine

Hong Kong International Airport has further boosted its capacity with the opening of its new HK$10 billion Midfield Concourse.

The 105,000sqm complex, which is connected to Terminal 1 by Automated People Mover (APM), boasts 20 aircraft parking stands and the capacity to handle up to 10 million passengers per annum.

Speaking at this week’s opening ceremony, Airport Authority Hong Kong’s chairman, Jack So, called the opening of the Midfield Concourse (MFC) an “important development” for the airport.

“It is an important development as it will help the airport meet increasing passenger demand,” enthused So.

“In the past 12 months, Hong Kong International Airport has handled 68.2 million passengers – a year-on-year increase of 8.3%.

"With its capacity to serve an additional 10 million passengers every year, the MFC will enable us to increase the number of flights using airbridges to board and disembark, enhancing the overall passenger experience.”

Located to the west of Terminal 1 and between the two existing runways, construction of the five-storey new concourse began in 2011 and, noted So, was completed on schedule this week.

According to operator, AAHK, the concourse will gradually introduce restaurants, coffee shops and retail outlets to provide passengers with a “one-stop shopping and dining experience”.

The first departure from the MFC was Hong Kong Airlines flight HX658 bound for Okinawa, and AAHK marked the occasion by handing out gifts to all 300 passengers.

AAHK’s executive director of president of airport operations, C K Ng, revealed that usage of the MFC will be slowly cranked up over the coming months.

“We expect it will serve about 20% of daily passenger flights when operating at full capacity by next March,” he noted.

Arabian Aerospace - Turkish Airlines prepares for snow storm

     

Turkish Airlines has cancelled 142 of its flights to and from Istanbul as the city prepares for heavy snow, the Khaleej Times reports.

The majority of cancelled flights were domestic, however flights to European and Middle Eastern airports including Hamburg, Munich, Milan and Tehran have also been affected.

"The light snow that has been forecast around Istanbul on 30 December is expected to increase in severity on 31 December. For this reason, some journeys from Istanbul Ataturk and Sabiha Gokcen airports are cancelled and it is likely that there will be more weather-related problems on the same days," announced the carrier on its website.

Snow is expected to hit today, and continue on into early January.

Fiji Airways gets first Airbus A330-300 – Aviation Gazette

   

PRESIDENT Jioje Konrote will bring Fiji Airway’s brand new Airbus A330-300 aircraft home tomorrow.
The aircraft is scheduled to touchdown at Nadi International Airport at 10am.
The aircraft will be met by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, ministers and Fiji Airways board, management and staff.
The aircraft has the ability to carry 289 passengers in economy class and 24 business class passengers as opposed to the Airbus A330-200 series aircraft Fiji Airways currently operates which seats 12 passengers in business class and 249 in economy.
The aircraft will be accorded traditional ceremonies of welcome when it arrives.
The leased Airbus A330-300 is expected to enter service next month after clearing local civil aviation requirements.

Estonia's National Airline Is Officially Bankrupt – Skift

   

An Estonian court has formally declared the Baltic nation’s state-owned airline bankrupt after it ceased operations last month following a European Union order to repay millions in state aid.

The Harju County Court said Tuesday that the bankruptcy proceedings for Estonian Air are to be carried out immediately, with the first meeting of creditors scheduled on Jan. 15.

The EU’s executive Commission said on Nov. 7 that Estonia had breached EU rules by injecting capital into the ailing carrier for years. The Commission obliged the airline to pay back 85 million euros plus interest to the Estonian taxpayers.

The Estonian government earlier this year established a new airline, Nordic Aviation Group. It started operations immediately after the EU’s decision.
