Meridiana reaches deal with unions | ATWOnline

Italian carrier Meridiana has agreed a redundancy package with its trade unions, a prerequisite to Qatar Airways taking a stake in the struggling Sardinia-based company.

After days of negotiations that at one point saw Qatar Airways walk away from the table, Meridiana’s unions agreed a package of job reductions and cuts to salaries.

Meridiana has a workforce of 1,600. This will be reduced by 396, consisting of 325 cabin crew with the remainder split between ground staff and maintenance personnel. A further 250 staff have already taken a voluntary redundancy package.

There will also be pay reductions of around 20% for pilots and cabin crew as part of a new, three-year labor contract.

The company—which operates a mixed fleet of Boeing 737-300s, -700s and -800s, 767-200ERs and -300ERs, plus MD-82s— has not made a profitsince 2008 and has been kept afloat by cash infusions from its parent organization, the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development.

Qatar Airways, which has been tight-lipped during the latest round of negotiations, is understood to see Meridiana as a way of increasing its European presence. Italy is a significant market for the big Gulf carriers, with Etihad Airways holding a 49% stake in flag carrier Alitalia.

“The [Italian] government, Meridiana and the unions have signed a framework agreement in which the unions agreed a new labor contract,” a Meridiana spokeswoman said. “This is one of the pillars to go into the future with Qatar Airways and formed one of the conditions of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) [between the two airlines].”

Meridiana had previously warned that, if the unions did not agree to the deal with Qatar and the accompanying redundancies, a far greater number—more than 900—would have to be laid off to give it a chance of operating as a standalone airline.

There is as yet no precise indication of when the MOU between Meridiana and Qatar Airways will be converted into a firm agreement.

Atlanta (CNN)More than 500 passengers aboard the first Qatar Airways flight to Atlanta flew 7,400 miles from Doha, Qatar, without incident, but during the final few hundred yards of their journey they got caught up in an international dustup between airline heavyweights.
Here at the world’s busiest airport — with seven concourses and more than 200 gates — a gate for the Super Jumbo Airbus A380 could not be provided. That forced Qatar Airways passengers to deplane Wednesday via mobile stairs and shuttle buses.
Atlanta’s airport has only one gate that can accommodate the A380 — the world’s largest airliner. The airport and resident hub carrier Delta Air Lines said they could not make that gate available.
The very public battle between Delta Air Lines, the world’s second largest airline, and competitor Qatar Airways represents a microcosm of the national debate over whether the amount of alleged government subsidies foreign airlines receive violates international Open Skies agreements.
Hundreds of Qatar passengers were inconvenienced in Atlanta. Some wanted to know who to blame for not having a jetway where they could deplane. The airport and Delta blamed the airline for not giving enough notice that it was sending a Super Jumbo to an airport with only one gate that could handle such a big plane.
“It is a part of the common use lease agreement that we have,” said airport spokesman Reese McCranie. “We have to be given a certain amount of time when there is an equipment swap.”
Four to six Delta aircraft needed access to the A380 gate at the time the Qatar Airways plane requested access.
“… there wasn’t anywhere Delta could put them,” McCranie added.
Delta offered as a “solution” a scenario that included parking the A380 on a remote stand near the international terminal. “Despite limited time to solve for the request, Delta offered solutions to allow Qatar to use the gates while ensuring our own schedule remained accommodated during a heavy traffic period at the international terminal,” Delta said in a written statement.
“Delta applies for accommodations months in advance,” a Delta spokeswoman said. “Qatar did not do that when asking for the A380.” The A380 was scheduled for the flight at least a month in advance, according to several widely published reports.
When asked if the airline gave enough notice to schedule access to the gate, Gunter Saurwein, Qatar Airways’ vice president for the Americas, smiled and said, “In general yes, we gave some lead time that we would be here.”
When asked if Delta may have deliberately prevented Qatar from using the gate, Sawrwein said, “I do not want to comment on that. We as an airline don’t finger point.”
The crew deplaned the double-decker jet’s 517 passengers in 45 minutes, including some disabled travelers. Although that’s much longer than it usually takes to deplane via a jetway, Sawrwein described it as a success under the circumstances.
Later, the outbound A380 flight experienced a two hour delay due to the same gate situation.

Η Qatar Airways σχεδιάζει να βάλει δρομολόγιο, χωρίς στάση, το οποίο θα διανύει 9.034 μίλια και θα είναι η μεγαλύτερη πτήση που έχει καταγραφεί με διάρκεια 18 ωρών και 34 λεπτών, σύμφωνα με την ιστοσελίδα travelmath.com.

Qatar Airways flies into Los Angeles | Breaking Travel News

Qatar Airways has rung in the New Year with a new daily, non-stop service between Los Angeles International Airport and Hamad International Airport in Doha.

The new route features the airline’s landmark Boeing 777-200 and represents Qatar Airways’ first passenger service to the West Coast of the United States.

The expansion to LAX is the first of three new US destinations planned for 2016, along with Boston on March 16th and Atlanta on June 1st.

“We are honoured to bring our award-winning service to Los Angeles,” said Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, Akbar Al Baker.

“This great city embodies the glamour and sophistication that gave rise to the ’jet set’ lifestyle, when travel truly started to be part of our life experience.”

The first arrival to Los Angeles was recognised with a special gate ceremony, celebrating the passengers on the historic flight.

The airline will officially celebrate the new Los Angeles route on January 12th, when Al Baker will host a press conference and a star-studded VIP gala.

“Los Angeles and Doha have much in common,” continued Al Baker.

“As passionate homes for sport, fashion, art and world-class entertainment, this new Qatar Airways service forms a bridge spanning continents and cultures, which will further strengthen our cultural and commercial bonds.

The LAX launch comes as Qatar Airways continues to expand operations in the United States and around the world.
In addition to new launches in Boston and Atlanta, the airline is enhancing existing services along its successful US routes.

On December 8th, Qatar Airways brought the state-of-the-art Airbus A350, the “airliner of the next decade,” to American shores for the first time.

The airline commenced a regularly-scheduled daily A350 service on January 1st to Philadelphia, and Qatar Airways will also begin a A350 service along a second route between New York and Doha in April.
