The word "fire" is heard on the cockpit voice recorder of MS804

CAIRO: The word "fire" is heard on the cockpit voice recorder of EgyptAir 804 before the plane crashed into the Mediterranean in May, an Egyptian-led investigative committee said Saturday.
Investigators had earlier said the other black box retrieved from the crash site, the data recorder, confirmed that smoke alarms had sounded on board, while soot on wreckage indicates a fire.
"The committee had... started listening to the cockpit voice recordings before the occurrence of the accident; where the existence of 'fire' was mentioned," it said in a statement.
"Still it is too early to determine the reason or the place where that fire started," it said.
The data on the voice recorder had been downloaded earlier this month after it was repaired.
The plane was carrying 40 Egyptians, 15 French, two Iraqis, two Canadians and one passenger each from Algeria, Belgium, Britain, Chad, Portugal, Saudi Arabia and Sudan.
The committee statement said the search for the remains of the passengers has ended.
The ship conducting the search "reached the port of Alexandria today after the end of its mission, which had been extended for the second time, after making sure of the recovery of all human remains at the site of the accident", it said.
Both Egyptian and French judiciary have opened investigations into the mysterious incident, without ruling out a terrorist attack.
The crash followed the bombing of a Russian passenger plane over Egypt's restive Sinai Peninsula last October, killing all 224 passengers and crew.
The Islamic State jihadist group claimed responsibility for that attack, but there has been no such claim linked to the EgyptAir crash.
Egypt's aviation minister had initially said an attack was the more likely explanation, but President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said there was no theory being favored yet.
EgyptAir said last week that advance compensation payments of $25,000 will be offered to families of the 66 people killed in the crash.
The payments are separate to those expected from insurance companies on behalf of various parties depending on the investigation into the disaster.

EgyptAir MS804 data shows evidence of onboard fire | ATWOnline

Initial evidence gleaned from the flight data recorder (FDR) of Egyptair flight MS804 indicates the Airbus A320 experienced smoke in two separate locations on the aircraft prior to its crash into the Mediterranean Sea.
The Egyptian investigating committee said that, following the successful cleaning and repair of the FDR in France, it has successfully downloaded the data and is now decoding and validating some 1,200 parameters. The committee added that the recovered data covered the entire flight from takeoff at Paris Charles De Gaulle airport to the point at 37,000 ft. over the Mediterranean “where the accident occurred.”
The EgyptAir A320 was en route from Paris Charles de Gaulle to Cairo May 19 with 66 people on board when itlost radar contact and crashed.
Work is now underway on the next phase of reading and analyzing the data.
There have been reports for some weeks that messages sent by the aircraft’s Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS), which sends data on any faults or deviations from the norm to an airline’s home base, indicated the presence of smoke in both a an avionics bay under the flight deck and a lavatory.
“Recorded data is showing a consistency with ACARS messages of lavatory smoke and avionics smoke,” the committee said in a statement, adding: “Some recovered wreckage  parts of the front section  of the aircraft showed signs of high temperature damage and soot.”
Work is now underway to identify the source and cause of those indications.
A recovery operation is continuing to retrieve the aircraft wreckage, which lies around 3,000 feet down in the Mediterranean. Recovery of human remains at the site will also continue until all are retrieved, it said.
The investigating committee said work is continuing at France’s BEA crash investigation bureau to repair the aircraft’s cockpit voice recorder.

EgyptAir Flight MS804: France says crash was not an act of terrorism | The Independent

egyptair-crash-plane-a320-airbus-.jpg

French authorities have not found any evidence that the crash of an EgyptAir flight in May was terror-related.
Investigators have launched a manslaughter inquiry into the Flight 804 crash that crashed in the Mediterranean last month, killing all 66 people on board.
The Airbus A320 was flying from Paris to Cairo when it crashed into May 19. The reason for the crash is still unclear.
The pilots made no distress call and no group claimed responsibility for bringing down the aircraft.
Prosecutor's office spokesman Agnes Thibault-Lecuivre said the inquiry into the downed Paris to Cairo flight would be an accident investigation, not a terrorism investigation.
She said authorities are "not at all" favouring the theory the plane was downed deliberately, though the status of the inquiry could eventually change if evidence emerges to that effect.
Search teams have recovered its two flight recorders, but they suffered damage and Egyptian investigators were unable to download information from the so-called black boxes.
The recorders' memory cards arrived on Monday in Paris, Egyptian investigators said.
Technicians at France's air accident investigation agency, the BEA, will attempt to remove salt damage and repair them, and then send them back to Egypt for analysis.
While the plane was Egyptian and crashed in Egyptian waters, France can also investigate because the plane was manufactured by France-based Airbus and French citizens were among those killed.

Blackboxes from MS804 recovered – Aviation Gazette

35288_1428588043

Egyptian officials Thursday said they had recovered one of the black boxes from EgyptAir Flight 804, putting them closer to figuring out why the plane crashed into the Mediterranean Sea last month.
A specialized vessel, the John Lethbridge belonging to Deep Ocean Search Ltd., was able to locate and recover the cockpit voice recorder, one of the Airbus Group SE A320 plane’s black boxes. The device was damaged, but the memory unit that retains two hours of conversations from the cockpit was retrieved, Egyptian officials said in a statement.
The flight data recorder, which stores technical parameters on the flight, hasn’t been recovered yet.
Egypt said it was preparing to move the recovered memory unit from the ship to the Egyptian coast town of Alexandria.

According to French public TV, Egyptair A320 made 3 emergency landings before #MS804 crash | AIRLIVE.net

BREAKING According to French public TV, the Airbus A320 made 3 emergency landings during the 24 hours preceding the crash

The Airbus A320's flight MS804 EgyptAir which crashed into the Mediterranean Sea on the night of Wednesday 18 to Thursday 19 May, was forced to turn around and emergency landing at least 3 times during the 24 hours before the crash, according to information from French public TV France 3 gathered Wednesday 1 June.
The aircraft made six rotations between Asmara (Eritrea), Cairo (Egypt), Tunis (Tunisia) and Paris when it suddenly disappeared from radar screens.
In its different rotations between 18 and 19 May, ACARS messages sent to the ground signaled anomalies on board shortly after takeoff from 3 airports. We do not know yet the exact nature.
These alert procedures have caused each time a technical audit on the ground but the aircraft was allowed to take off again to continue his journey over the Mediterranean.

EgyptAir flight MS804: Signals detected from an emergency locator transmitter | AIRLIVE.net

Signal from ELT (emergency locator transmitter) was received by satellite on day of crash.
Egyptian search teams detected an emergency signal from EgyptAir Flight 804 that could help them locate the aircraft’s fuselage on the floor of the Mediterranean Sea, the lead investigator into the disaster said Thursday.
The investigator, Capt. Ayman Al Moqadem, told Egypt’s flagship state newspaper Al Ahram that the detection of the signal by satellite narrowed the search zone for the main body of the plane to a radius of about 3 miles.

Did EgyptAir Flight #MS804 made an emergency descent to try to clear the fumes? | AIRLIVE.net

573d2f3bc4618858118b4568

EgyptAir flight number MS804 lost contact with radar at 02:45 Cairo time Thursday at an altitude of 37,000ft after having entered Egyptian airspace. There was no indication that EgyptAir or any civil air authority had received any distress calls or indication of mechanical trouble. There were no reports of bad weather and there is no terrain over the Mediterranean Sea as the plane would be approaching Egypt.

French TV channel M6 claiming Egyptair #MS804 made an emergency descent to try to clear the fumes

French TV Channel M6 said that the pilot told Cairo control about the smoke which had engulfed parts of the aircraft and decided to make an emergency descent to try to clear the fumes.
This account directly contradicts the official claim that there was no distress call from the plane.
M6’s story, quoting unnamed French aviation officials, was not confirmed by the French air accident investigation agency, the BEA.
M6 said that the pilot of the Egyptair A320 had "a conversation several minutes long" with Cairo air traffic control. As a result of the conversation, the pilot decided to make an “emergency descent”, depressurising the cabin, in an attempt to clear smoke fumes which had invaded the front of the aircraft.

French Investigators Say Smoke Reported On EgyptAir Jet Before Crash

PARIS, May 21 (Reuters) - An EgyptAir jet sent a series of signals indicating that smoke had been detected on board before it crashed into the Mediterranean on Thursday, France’s air accident investigation agency said on Saturday.
A spokesman for the BEA agency said the signals did not indicate what caused the smoke or fire on board the plane, which plunged into the sea with 66 people on board as it was heading from Paris to Cairo.
But they offered the first clues as to what unfolded in the moments before the crash.
One aviation source said that a fire on board would likely have generated multiple warning signals, while a sudden explosion may not have generated any - though officials stress that no scenario, including explosion, is being ruled out.
Egypt said its navy had found human remains, wreckage and the personal belongings of passengers floating in the Mediterranean about 290 km (180 miles) north of Alexandria.
The army published pictures on Saturday on its official Facebook page of the recovered items, which included blue debris with EgyptAir markings, seat fabric with designs in the airline’s colors, and a yellow lifejacket.
Analysis of the debris and recovery of the black boxes are likely to be key to determining the cause of the crash - the third blow since October to Egypt’s travel industry, still reeling from political unrest following the 2011 uprising that ousted Hosni Mubarak.
A suspected Islamic State bombing brought down a Russian airliner after it took off from Sharm el-Sheikh airport in late October, killing all 224 people on board, and an EgyptAir plane was hijacked in March by a man wearing a fake suicide belt.
The October crash devastated Egyptian tourism, a main source of foreign exchange for a country of 80 million people, and another similar incident would crush hopes of it recovering.

HUNT FOR BLACK BOXES

The signals from the plane “do not allow in any way to say what may have caused smoke or fire on board the aircraft,” said a spokesman for the French BEA agency, which is assisting an official Egyptian investigation.
He added that the priority now was to find the two flight recorders, known as black boxes, containing cockpit voice recordings and data readings, from the Airbus A320 which vanished from radar early on Thursday.
The plane is believed to have come down in a deep part of the Mediterranean, in 2,000 to 3,000 meters of water, according to a person familiar with Western naval estimates.
That would place the black box locator beacons, which last for 30 days, on the edge of their detectable range from the surface using acoustic equipment typically used during the first stages of a search, according to a report into the 2009 crash of an Air France jet in the Atlantic.
The flight data transmitted before the crash was sent through an automatic system called the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS), which routinely downloads maintenance and fault data to the airline operating the aircraft.
Aviation website Aviation Herald published a burst of seven messages broadcast over the space of three minutes. These included alarms about smoke in the lavatory as well as the aircraft’s avionics area, which sits under the cockpit.
While suggesting a possible fire, the relatively short sequence of data gives no insight into pilot efforts to control the aircraft, nor does it show whether it fell in one piece or disintegrated in mid-air, two aviation safety experts said.
“The question now is whether the fire that caused the smoke was the result of an electrical fault - for example a short-circuit caused by damaged wiring - or whether some form of explosive or incendiary device was used - for example by a terrorist - to generate a fire or other damage,” aviation safety expert David Learmont said.
The ACARS data suggested the fire had spread fast and “that might explain the fact that there was no distress call,” Learmont wrote in a blog.
The aircraft was carrying 56 passengers, including a child and two infants, and 10 crew, EgyptAir said on Thursday. They included 30 Egyptian and 15 French nationals, along with citizens of 10 other countries.
“At this very moment all scenarios are being examined and none is being given greater emphasis,” French Foreign Affairs Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault told reporters after meeting relatives of the victims of the EgyptAir crash.
“Searching for the aircraft is the priority, finding the ‘black boxes’ will help answer the legitimate questions raised (by the families),” Ayrault said.
France sent a plane and a navy ship to assist with the searches for the jet and three representatives of the BEA, together with an expert from Airbus, were in Cairo to help with the investigation.
The naval search is centered on an area north of Alexandria, just south of where the signal from the plane was lost early on Thursday.
EgyptAir Chairman Safwat Moslem told state television that the radius of the search zone was 40 miles, giving an area of 5,000 square miles, but said it may be expanded.
A European satellite spotted a 2 km-long oil slick in the Mediterranean, about 40 km southeast of the aircraft’s last known position, the European Space Agency said.

Crash: Egypt A320 over Mediterranean on May 19th 2016, aircraft found crashed, ACARS messages indicate fire on board

By Simon Hradecky, created Thursday, May 19th 2016 03:35Z, last updated Friday, May 20th 2016 18:23Z

An Egyptair Airbus A320-200, registration SU-GCC performing flight MS-804 (dep May 18th) from Paris Charles de Gaulle (France) to Cairo (Egypt) with 56 passengers and 10 crew, was enroute at FL370 over the Mediterranan Sea about 130nm north of Alexandria (Egypt) and about 210nm northnorthwest of Cairo when the transponder signals of the aircraft ceased at 02:33L (00:33Z). The aircraft was located crashed in the Mediterranean Sea, there were no survivors.

Search and Recovery

On May 19th 2016 France is joining the search and rescue efforts dispatching ships and aircraft into the search area, which is already being scanned by Greek and Egypt aircraft and ships.

On May 19th 2016 a good number of civilian ships in the area have, according to MarineTraffic, veered off their intended courses and are now steaming towards a common position at approximately N33.4 E29.7 approximately 30nm eastnortheast of the last ADS-B position. A first ship "Oceanus" has already reached that position and is nearly stationary there.

On May 20th morning Egypt's Military announced, Egyptian naval aircraft and vessels found debris from the A320 aircraft as well as personal belongings of passengers about 290km (156nm) north of Alexandria (Egypt).

On May 20th European Space Agency (ESA) reported Sentinel-1A radar satellite images showed a 2km long slick at position N33.5333 E29.2167, about 40km/21.6nm from the last transponder position, coinciding with the suspected area of impact of flight MS-804. The photo was taken on May 19th 2016 at 16:00Z. Image below.

In the afternoon of May 20th 2016 Egyptair reported that more debris has been found during the day including body parts, passengers' belongings, aircraft seats.

Statements

On May 19th 2016 at 05:00L (03:00Z) the airline reported, that flight MS-804, estimated to land in Cairo at 03:10L (01:10Z), is missing and so far has not landed at any airport in reach of the aircraft. Egyptair subsequently tweeted that the aircraft was enroute at FL370 about to enter Egyptian Airspace when radar contact with the aircraft was lost at 02:45L (00:45Z). A search and rescue operation has been launched. The airline further corrected initial statement of 59 passengers to 56 passengers actually on board of the aircraft. The commander had accumulated 6,275 hours with 2,101 hours on type, the first officer has accumulated 2,675 hours. The aircraft had been manufactured in 2003. The airline has opened hotlines for relatives at +202 25989320 (outside Egypt) and 080077770000 (landline in Egypt).

On May 19th 2016 at about 07:40L (05:40Z) Egyptair updated their statement saying, that the contact with the aircraft was lost 280km (151nm) from the Coast of Egypt at 02:30L (00:30Z). The crew comprised the captain, first officer, 5 cabin crew and 3 sky marshals. Amongst the passengers there were 30 Egyptians, 15 French, 2 Iraqis, 1 British, 1 Belgian, 1 Kuwaiti, 1 Saudi, 1 Sudanese, 1 Chadian, 1 Portugese, 1 Algerian and 1 Canadian.

On May 19th 2016 Greece's Civil Aviation Authority reported radar contact with the aircraft was lost about 2 minutes after the aircraft was handed off from Greek to Egyptian Air Traffic Control. The crew did not report any problems up to hand off. The CAA subsequently clarified, that the crew was talking to air traffic control in Greek when the aircraft entered the Greek control zone. When ATC attempted to hand the aircraft off to Egypt the crew did not respond, radar contact was lost 2 minutes after the first attempt to raise the crew for hand off, the aircraft was 7nm past mandatory reporting point KUMBI (N33.7139 E28.7500), boundary between Greek and Egyptian control zone.

On May 19th 2016 at 08:25L (06:25Z) Egypt Air reported that search and rescue have picked up an emergency locator transmitter (ELT) signal. Dawn in the area was at 04:26L.

On May 19th 2016 at 10:15L (08:15Z) Airbus posted "Airbus regrets to confirm that an A320 operated by Egyptair was lost at around 02:30 am (Egypt local time) today over the Mediterranean sea. The aircraft was operating a scheduled service, Flight MS 804 from Paris, France to Cairo, Egypt. The aircraft involved, registered under SU-GCC was MSN (Manufacturer Serial Number) 2088 delivered to Egyptair from the production line in November 2003. The aircraft had accumulated approximately 48,000 flight hours. It was powered by IAE engines. At this time no further factual information is available."

On May 19th 2016 at 12:30L (10:30Z) France's President Hollande announced that the aircraft has crashed while flying over the Mediterranean Sea in Egyptian Airspace.

On May 19th 2016 Egypt's Civil Aviation Minister said in a press conference, Egypt continues to call the aircraft "missing". The Government does not rule out any cause as of yet, neither mechanical failure nor terrorism.

On May 19th 2016 at 14:55L (12:55Z) Greek Authorities reported that search aircraft have spotted two objects floating on the sea surface about 50nm south of the last transponder position and about 230nm southsoutheast of Crete (Greece). The objects were white and red and appeared to be made of plastics. Authorities subsequently reported two orange objects also seen appear to be aircraft life vests, position near N33.3 E29.9 (about 40nm east of last transponder position).

On May 19th 2016 at 19:10L (17:10Z) Egyptair confirmed that according to Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (parts of) the wreckage have been located crashed in the Mediterranean Sea. Families of passengers and crew have been informed, the airline expresses their deepest sympathies. The Egyptian Investigation Team continues to search for other remains of the aircraft.

On May 20th 2016 about 00:00L Christiane Amanpour (CNN) tweeted that Egyptair's Vice President retracted the statement, that debris of the aircraft had been found and said they were mistaken. However, Egyptair did not retract such statements on all their official outlets, on their main website the statement was reposted instead with timestamp May 20th 2016.

Investigation

On May 19th 2016 the responsible Paris states attorney has opened an investigation into the disappearance of the aircraft but cautioned, that a mechanical failure or other causes besides terrorism have not been ruled out at this point. No credible claims of downing the aircraft have been made so far.

On May 20th 2016 Egypt's Authorities reported that an accident investigation commission has been formed to investigate the crash.

On May 20th 2016 the French BEA reported 3 investigators have been dispatched to Egypt by the BEA to join the investigation led by Egyptian Authorities.
