MIAMI — Italian carrier Meridiana will begin serving Miami, with two weekly flights from Milan, starting on December 2.
Meridiana comes to compete directly with American Airlines, which offers a direct daily service between both cities, and with Alitalia, which serves a daily flight to Rome and a 3-weekly seasonal service to Milan between October and March. According to Miami International Airport, it serves over 275,000 passengers annually to and from Italy.
To date, Miami is served by over 100 passenger and cargo carriers — the most of any airport in the United States.
“In the first quarter of 2016, passenger traffic from Italy to MIA was up 15 percent, and we look forward to seeing Meridiana bolster that growth trend with their new service to Milan,” said Miami-Dade Aviation Director Emilio T. González.
In addition to Meridiana, Miami will welcome other three European carriers, set to start in the coming months.
In September, Lufthansa’s low-cost division, Eurowings, will launch three weekly flights from Cologne; Scandinavian Airlines will launch daily service, with its first flight to Copenhagen on September 28 and to Oslo a day after. In October, KLM will resume its Amsterdam service, beginning on October 30 until March 23, 2017 with three weekly flights.
Despite the recent economic woes of Brazil, Miami’s top international market, Miami Airport domestic travelers have increased by 5 percent, while international travelers rose by 1 percent so far.
The airport experienced a record year of 8-percent growth in 2015.
