The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says it has downgraded Thailand to Category 2 after an audit of the country's Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) in October showed continued non-compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) safety standards.
In a statement, the agency said that while Thai carriers already serving the United States would be allowed to continue doing so, they would not be permitted to establish new routes to the United States. Thai Airways International (TG, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi) axed its last remaining service to the US - Bangkok Suvarnabhumi-Seoul Incheon-Los Angeles Int'l - in late October.
"A reassessment in July 2015 found that Thailand did not meet international standards," the FAA said. "Today’s announcement follows ongoing discussions with the government of Thailand which concluded on October 28."
The FAA's move comes five months after the ICAO formally instituted a Serious Safety Concern (SSC) against Thailand for failure to adequately address shortcomings identified during a Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme (USOAP) inspection in January.
