Portuguese airport operator, ANA, has confirmed that Medeira’s capital city airport is to be renamed after its favourite son, football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo!
The airport, currently known as Madeira Airport, is to be renamed Madeira Cristiano Ronaldo Airport in honour of him and the part he played in Portugal’s success in winning Euro 2016 a few weeks ago.
Madeira’s governor, Miguel Albuquerque, recently made notice of his intentions to rename the airport after Ronaldo and ANA confirmed that it was a done deal this morning.
“We can confirm that the Regional Government of Madeira has decided to baptise Madeira Airport as Cristiano Ronaldo Airport,” a spokesman told Airport World.

Ronaldo, who was born on the island and already has a museum, bronze statue and hotel named after him on the island, returned to Madeira last week to open the doors of his own five-star hotel.
