Thai A333 at Chiang Mai on Jun 11th 2016, engine shut down in flight



A Thai Airways Airbus A330-300, registration HS-TEJ performing flight TG-111 from Chiang Mai to Bangkok (Thailand), was climbing out of Chiang Mai's runway 18 when the left hand engine (PW4168) emitted a number of bangs and streaks of flame. The crew stopped the climb at 4000 feet, shut the engine down and returned to Chiang Mai for a safe landing on runway 36 about 12 minutes after departure.

A replacement Airbus A320-200 registration HS-TXC was dispatched to Chiang Mai and delivered the passengers to Bangkok with a delay of 6 hours.

The airline reported the #1 engine suffered problems while climbing through about 1300 feet prompting the crew to secure the engine and return to Chiang Mai. A replacement aircraft was dispatched to resume the flight.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Chiang Mai about 3 days and 10 hours later.
