Frankfurt today became the latest airport to reveal that it set a new traffic record in 2015 – handling more than 60 million passengers for the first time in a calendar year.

A total of 61 million passengers passed through theGerman hub last year – an increase of 2.5% on 2014.

And operator, Fraport, is quick to point out that the figure would have been even higher had it not been for a strike by Lufthansa's pilots that forced many flight cancellations.

Indeed, if it hadn't happened, Fraport estimates that at passenger numbers would have risen by 3.8%.
Another cause of celebration in 2015 was the gateway's busiest ever day, when 217,500 passengers used Frankfurt Airport on August 2.

Fraport CEO, Dr Stefan Schulte, noted that last year's groundbreaking ceremony for Frankfurt Airport's new Terminal 3 ensures that the gateway is well prepared for future growth.

Schulte said: "With the groundbreaking ceremony for Terminal 3, we have also in the past year created an important foundation for the future viability of Frankfurt Airport."

The 2015 picture for the Fraport Group's airports outside of Germany was a lttle mixed with Ljubljana, Lima and Xi'an all reporting an upturn in traffic while St Petersburg, Varna, Burgas and Antalya recorded declines.
"The passenger declines at our airport holdings in St Petersburg, Varna, Burgas and Antalya are due to the weakness of the Russian economy and the ruble," explained Schulte.

"The strong development of locations like Ljubljana, Lima and Xi'an, however, shows that it is right and important to establish our portfolio geographically wide. "
