Delta DL1 B763 returned to London, bird strike

A Delta Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration N176DN flight DL-1 from London,EN (UK) to New York JFK,NY (USA), was climbing out of Heathrow Airport's runway 09R when the right hand engine (PW4060) ingested a large bird and began to run rough. The crew stopped the climb at 4000 feet and returned to Heathrow for a safe landing on runway 09L about 30 minutes after departure.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground at Heathrow about 6 hours after landing.

The flight was cancelled.

Ground observers reported the aircraft engines sounded extremely noisy, some comparing the sound to a Lancaster or a Wellington bomber, others suspected the Ram Air Turbine might have deployed. The right hand engine was observed emitting light smoke.
