Moscow Domodedovo International Airport is scheduled to open a new passenger terminal, T2, in 1Q 2018. It is investing RUB32.3 billion ($502.6 million) in the new terminal.
“The building and installation costs are RUB27 billion. Together with investments into technique it will be RUB32.3 billion,” Domodedovo T2 project head Alexander Boyko said. “Up to the day we have accomplished 15% of the project, and as of the end of May, we had spent RUB4 billion.”
T2 will nearly double Domodedovo’s existing terminal space, to 500,000 sq m, when it will be able to handle more than 45 million passengers. The much-delayed project, originally announced in September 2014, was initially scheduled for completion before the end of 2016.
In March, the Russian government announced a RUB13 billion investment in Domodedovo’s airfield infrastructure. Most of the money will be spent on construction of a new runway. After that, one of the two existing runways will be turned into a taxiway.
According to Russian legislation, airfields cannot be privatized and remain government property even if the airport is managed by a private company and its terminal infrastructure was bought or rented privately.
Development is continuing even though Domodedovo owner Dmitry Kamenshchik is under house arrest, accused of establishing inappropriate airport security measures that led to the terrorist attack on Jan. 24, 2011, which killed 37 and injured 172 people.
Over the past 15 years, Domodedovo traffic has grown nearly tenfold. In 2015, the airport handled 30.5 million passengers. Since 1996, RUB31 billion has been invested in airport construction.
