Free Wi-Fi access at Sheremetyevo Airport

In preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2018, Sheremetyevo International Airport has completed the commissioning of state-of-the-art high-performance Wi-Fi infrastructure and begun to provide free wireless Internet access at high speed and without restrictions. The new service will meet customer needs in terms of high-technology features and free access to information. The high-speed Wi-Fi network will cover the public and sterile areas in the airport’s passenger terminals (C, D, E and F), spanning some 400,000 sq. meters, to provide seamless Wi-Fi roaming within the network.
“Analysis of data from the Secret Passenger program, the innovations contest ‘Idea Sheremetyevo’, and various feedback channels revealed the wide-scale need on the part of passengers and airport customers for unlimited and high-speed Internet access and customary local and global communications systems. By providing free Internet access, Sheremetyevo has responded to public demand and created a high-tech-friendly environment in which passengers, guests and partners of the airport have unlimited access to email, instant messengers, social media and any online resources of the World Wide Web,” said Igor Gaponov, Deputy General Director for Information Technology.
Throughout 2016, a work package to expand coverage and upgrade existing access points while installing new ones was performed at the airport. Currently, the Wi-Fi network at Sheremetyevo comprises more than 150 access points for advanced wireless data standards 802.11a\b\g\n. Wi-Fi network capacity at Sheremetyevo has increased significantly and is now at the same level as the world’s top airports. The speed of a single channel of the _Sheremetyevo Wi-Fi network distributed among all users is up to 2 Gbit/s.
Internet connection is organised with the technical support of Maxim Telecom, taking into account the mandatory user identification required by applicable law. User identification is provided through confirmation of mobile telephone number or by entering login and password from the personal account on the Government Services Portal gosuslugi.ru. For users who have authenticated to the network _Sheremetyevo Wi-Fi before, no additional ID procedures will be required.
Users of communications devices based on iOS and Android operating systems are recommended to use the mobile app, which is available for download when logging onto the network _Sheremetyevo Wi-Fi.
Sheremetyevo is constantly introducing technology innovations to improve the quality of passenger service. Providing free and unlimited Internet access via Wi-Fi is one of the planned and necessary stages of upgrading the airport’s IT infrastructure. Investment in wireless-communications infrastructure is a foundation for further improving the accessibility, appeal and efficiency of various services for passengers and visitors at Sheremetyevo Airport.
According to statistics, the following online services are especially popular among Sheremetyevo passengers and customers: flight check-in, booking and sale of airline tickets, flight status tracking, navigating through the duty-free zone, calling for a taxi, etc.
Sheremetyevo International Airport is the largest Russian airport in the volume of passenger and cargo traffic, take-off and landing operations and airport area. The destinations network of Sheremetyevo includes over 200 destinations. In 2015 Sheremetyevo Airport served 31 million 612 thousand passengers.
