American Airlines has rolled out more “Heritage” planes — those painted in the retro styles of its predecessor carriers rolled up in mergers.
The latest one — and last one in the Heritage series — is AirCal, which was acquired by American in 1987. American finished painting the plane Saturday and it was in the air on Sunday, a spokesman said. (See photo at top.)
Also last month, American launched planes with the logos and colors of Trans World Airlines and Reno Air, both of which were acquired by American in 2001 and 1999, respectively. (See photos below.)

These Heritage planes are a tradition of US Airways for about a decade. US Airways itself became part of American in a December 2013 merger.

Fort Worth-based American now flies a total of nine Heritage planes. Here’s a list of the rest:
* Allegheny
* America West
* American’s retro “meatball” jet. (See photo below.)
* PSA
* Piedmont Airlines
* US Airways, which flew its last branded flight in October.

Earlier this year, American also paid tribute to its predecessors by launching special amenity kits for passengers on most of its international and transcontinental flights. The collectors’ items revive the colors and logos of the same nine airlines.
