easyJet to increase Scotland services with new aircraft | Breaking Travel News

easyJet to increase Scotland services with new aircraft

easyJet will be adding an additional aircraft to its Edinburgh operations from next year to cater for extra demand from its passengers and to enable the airline to fly to even more destinations from the airport.

From summer 2016 there will be 8 easyJet aircraft based at Edinburgh operating on 36 routes.
easyJet operates an unrivalled network of 62 destinations from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Inverness Airports. In 2015 easyJet launched services from Edinburgh to Stuttgart and Funchal and from Glasgow to Marrakech, Milan and Bordeaux. easyJet will commence services from Edinburgh to Vienna and Venice and from Glasgow to Marseille in 2016.
easyJet flew 5.5 million passengers between Scotland and Europe in the year to September and in the coming year easyJet expects this to grow by 10 per cent.
easyJet employs 435 crew in Scotland – 159 in Glasgow and 276 in Edinburgh. With the addition of the 8th aircraft easyJet expects to have over 300 employees based in Edinburgh including pilots, cabin crew and base management.

Carolyn McCall, easyJet’s chief executive, said: “Just over twenty years ago we launched the airline with services between London Luton and Glasgow. Twenty years on Scotland remains an important part of our strategy and we continue to see an opportunity for growth in Scotland.
“In the past four years we have grown our capacity in Scotland by 20% and 2015 has been an impressive year for easyJet in Scotland - we now operate 62 routes from Scotland across Europe.
“This 8th aircraft, that we are putting into our Edinburgh operations from Summer 2016, will accommodate the extra routes we have put on sale and the extra demand.”
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: “Improving Scotland’s connectivity is one of this Government’s top priorities, as it will help build strong business links and provide a real boost to our tourism industry.  easyJet’s latest announcement of new routes and a new aircraft for Edinburgh, along with the new direct jobs this will create, is evidence of their continued investment in our airports and I remain keen to support their aspirations to expand in Scotland.”

Big airfare sale – Asia, Hawaii, India, Africa

Chris McGinnis

Airlines are rolling out excellent Black Friday airfare sales — here are a few that caught my eyes today. To get the deal you must book your trip today through Monday night. What’s most remarkable about this sale is the length of the travel period– basically the first half of next year.
Cathay Pacific: Cathay’s sale fares are probably the broadest offering with economy roundtrip fares ranging from $675 to $800 to cities throughout Asia, including India. Travel window is Feb 9- Apr 30– or Sept 1-Sept 30. US gateways are : Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. See sale fares here.
Singapore Airlines: Super-low fares to Frankfurt, Moscow, Seoul or Tokyo for trips January 10 – May 31. The sale includes both economy and business class fares. Some very good deals: SFO-Seoul or LAX-Tokyo for just $600 round trip in economy or $3,000 in business class. New York-Frankfurt is just $700 roundtrip in economy and $2,700 in business class. See the sale fares here. SIA is also offering great deals on its brand new premium economy seats, with fares ranging from $1,300 to $1,750 round trip.
Emirates: 2-for-1 roundtrip fares from its US gateways to Milan, Dubai and beyond. Travel window is wide- from Jan 9- May 6 2016. Best deals: New York-Milan for $1,1oo for two or $550 each.  To Johannesburg for $1750 for two, or $875 each. Many more destinations included. See Emirates Black Friday sales
Some other good deals: Virgin America’s sale is good, too, and we found SFO-Hawaii fares as low as $418 round trip, plus most intra-California fares running less than $100 round trip. Transcons in the $320 roundtrip range. This sale is only in effect today, Friday Nov 27.  Sale fares here.

Meet Spencer, the airport robot that will make sure you don't miss your flight

by AMANDA CONNOLLY

Schiphol Airport is probably one of the most complicated airports to navigate around. That’s why KLM airlines has invested in a project to develop a robot that will help passengers find their way and avoid missing their flights in the Dutch airport.
Spencer is an armless friendly-looking robot that will be tested in Schiphol from the end of November.
The robot was created by a team that used research from five different Universities around Europe and is funded in part by the European Commission.
Spencer is equipped with a map of the airport and can survey its surroundings by measuring the distance to various obstructions using laser beams. Pre-loaded obstructions, such as walls and stairs, won’t be a problem for the robot, and neither will people, according to the researchers.
It’s trained to understand human behavior and won’t be running over groups in the airport; it will know to move around the people in its way.
Spencer is also programmed to be cognizant, so it will know how many people are in the group it’s helping to navigate and check at intervals that all of the people are still with it.
What might be an issue though, according to its creators, is objects that are left somewhere temporarily. Achim Lilienthal, one of the professors involved in the research, explained:
Objects that are temporarily permanent so to speak, are the most difficult to work around. We do not know, for instance, how long that luggage trolley will be parked in a particular spot, which makes it harder for the robot to determine its own location. We are working on a general map representation that includes and allows the robot to handle temporarily permanent objects.
This will be one of the things the group wants to learn when the first trial starts on November 30. That trial is set to last one week and then the research team will leverage the data collected and use it to streamline Spencer before it officially gets to work in March next year.

Etihad Airways has won Best First Class at the annual Ultratravel Middle East Awards (ULTRAs) ceremony, which was held last night at the iconic Burj Al Arab Jumeirah hotel in Dubai.

The award is another major accolade for the UAE national airline’s First Class experience, which has repeatedly been voted best in the world.  The ULTRAs are voted for by the readers of Ultratravel Middle East, the regional edition of the United Kingdom’s exclusive Ultratravel magazine, a high-end luxury travel publication which was launched in the UK in 2004 in partnership with the Daily Telegraph. Ultratravel Middle East is distributed in English and Arabic within The National and Al Ittihad newspapers.  Peter Baumgartner, Etihad Airways’ chief commercial officer, said: “This award further validates and recognises the tremendous efforts which have gone in to creating the most innovative, stylish and luxurious First Class service in the air. We are incredibly proud to receive it.  “This year has been a momentous one for Etihad Airways. The Etihad Airways brand has been catapulted into the global consciousness as the world-leading provider of remarkable travel experiences in all classes of service.”

Alitalia Reveal Another Improvement To Their Passenger Experience | TheDesignAir

   Scene 02 A3 600 Fa

By

Alitalia today announced their latest wave of improvements to the passenger experience. Guests on all Alitalia flights can now use their phone to  check emails or send text messages immediately after their flight has landed, while the aircraft is taxiing to the terminal. A new “Gate to Gate” procedure to allow the use of personal electronic devices has been launched by the airline on its entire fleet of Airbus, Boeing and Embraer aircraft.

Phones, smartphones, tablets, e-books and portable electronic games can now remain switched on in “airplane mode” for the entire flight in order to listen music, watch movies or playing with no interruption for the entire stay in the aircraft, whilst laptops can be used from just after take off to just before landing.

  Presentazione nuova livrea Alitalia Etihad

Alitalia have been doing their own research to see what means most to their most frequent fliers. According to the survey, the demand for connectivity by air travellers is steadily increasing. Three out of four travellers among those surveyed expressed three particular needs:
· to switch on the phone and data connection after their aircraft has landed to check and send emails;
· to inform friends, relatives or colleagues waiting at the airport that the plane has landed;
· to spend more time working on their laptop during the flight.

Alitalia have already started their major renovation project including its entire medium (A320 family aircraft) and long-haul fleet which includes new cabin interiors as well as new services such as the on-board connectivity. Wi-fi is already available on six long-haul Airbus A330 aircraft and by 2016 Alitalia will be one of the very few European airlines to offer connectivity on its entire fleet of aircraft.
It seems the airline is on track to becoming one of Europe’s leading airlines, and whilst this news isn’t groundbreaking, it’s just one of many small fragments that are being pieced together (such as chauffeur services, new IFE systems, seats and aircraft) We look forward to seeing how Alitalia’s improvements shape up over the months ahead.
