A Kenya Airways Boeing 737-700, registration 5Y-KQG performing flight KQ-761 from Johannesburg (South Africa) to Nairobi (Kenya), was climbing out of Johannesburg when the crew needed to stop the climb and return to Johannesburg due to the failure of transponders. The aircraft landed safely back in Johannesburg.
The problem was resolved and the aircraft departed again after more than two hours on the ground, however, needed to divert to Mombasa (Kenya) due to crew duty time limitations.
A passenger reported the aircraft was climbing out of Johannesburg about to enter Zimbabwean Airspace when the captain announced that they were not permitted to enter Zimbabwe due to their transponder failure. They would return to Johannesburg and land there in about 15 minutes, however, were holding for about one hour before landing occurred. After second departure, on the way to Nairobi, the captain announced that the crew would be exceeding their crew duty time limitation of 15 hours if they continued and would lose their pilot licenses, hence they needed to divert to Mombasa.
