Have you ever taken off in an aircraft and wondered why you were heading in the opposite direction? The direction planes fly at Heathrow depends on the direction of the wind – not the destination. Planes must take off and land into the wind for safety reasons.
Around Heathrow the wind usually blows from the west. Because aircraft must land into the wind, the majority of aircraft therefore arrive from the east (over London) and take off towards the west (over Berkshire/Surrey). This is known as westerly operations. Westerly operations occur for about 70% of the year.
When the wind blows from the east, the reverse happens. Aircraft arrive from the west (over Berkshire) and depart towards London. This is called easterly operations and we are ‘on easterlies’ for about 30% of the year.
The percentage of westerlies and easterly operations varies from week to week and month to month. It is also affected by our ‘westerly preference’. We provide live updates on the direction Heathrow is operating via our website and twitter feed.
The direction of operation is determined by air traffic controller in relation to the wind speed and direction on the airfield at 1,000ft and 2,000ft. The position is constantly kept under review. The weather forecast made by the Met Office is not always a reliable indicator of what is happening at Heathrow since the Met Office forecast for the public relates to ground level.

Due to the direction of operation determined by the wind, the operation can change direction more than once in a day. We therefore are unable to control or predict which direction the airport will be operating in.

The crew immediately decided to stop the climb and return to Copenhagen advising air traffic control that all indications were normal, they would return immediately just slightly overweight. The aircraft stopped the climb at FL090 and landed safely back on Copenhagen's runway 22L about 20 minutes after departure.
A passenger reported the crew announced they had received a bird strike into the left hand engine.

The crew initiated a go around at about 550 feet MSL (425 feet Transponder Altitude at 1019 hPa QNH) and climbed out to safety. The aircraft positioned for a second approach and landed safely on runway 22R about 20 minutes later.
A Swiss International Airlines Airbus A321-200, registration HB-IOM performing flight LX-2111 from Malaga,SP (Spain) to Zurich (Switzerland), was cleared to climb to FL320 and was climbing through FL250 about 90nm northnortheast of Malaga when air traffic control instructed the flight to stop the climb at FL260 due to military traffic from their left.
A military aircraft was crossing the A321's flight track passing from the left to the right, initially maintaining FL270, however, before crossing the flight path of the A321 began a descent.
As result the A321 crew received a TCAS resolution advisory to descend which the crew complied with, after a descent of 500 feet another TCAS resolution advisory to reverse descent and climb now occurred, which the crew complied with too.
After being clear of conflict the A321 as well as the military aircraft continued to their destinations without further incidents.
Spain's CIAIAC opened an investigation into the occurrence reporting the minimum separation between the two aircraft reduced to 400 feet vertically and 0.4nm horizontally.

KLM says it will resume service to Tehran from October 30. Tehran will be the 14th new destination the flag carrier airline of the Netherlands has added to its network in 2016, Bahrain-based online business news and information portal Trade Arabia reported.
Four weekly services will be operated between Schiphol and Tehran, supplementing the Paris-Tehran service operated by Air France since April 16, 2016.
“KLM has further strengthened its network with a new destination – the 14th to be added this year. This confirms that our strategy is starting to bear fruit. On the one hand we are improving our efficiency and productivity, while on the other we are investing in growth,” said Pieter Elbers, KLM president and CEO.
The flights will be operated with a Boeing 777-200. KLM will meet passenger needs by offering three different travel classes on board: 34 seats in World Business Class, 40 seats in Economy Comfort, and 242 seats in Economy Class.
In the past, KLM operated service to Tehran from July 1991 through April 2013.
